Read and Download Mark Edward Lewis book Writing and Authority in Early China in PDF, EPub, Mobi, Kindle online. Full book Writing and Authority in Early China. This book was released on with total page 556 pages. Book excerpt: This book traces the evolving uses of writing to command assent and obedience in early China, an evolution that culminated in the establishment of a textual canon as the foundation of imperial authority. Its central theme is the emergence of this body of writings as the textual double of the state, and of the text-based sage as the double of the ruler. The book examines the full range of writings employed in early China, such as divinatory records, written communications with ancestors, government documents, the collective writings of philosophical and textual traditions, speeches attributed to historical figures, chronicles, verse anthologies, commentaries, and encyclopedic compendia. Lewis shows how these writings served to administer populations, control officials, form new social groups, invent new models of authority, and create an artificial language whose master generated power and whose graphs became potent objects.

Book excerpt: This book comprehensively examines architecture, urban planning, and civic perception in three modern cities as they transform into national capitals through an entangled, transnational process that involves an imaginative geography based on embellished memories of classical Athens. Schinkel’s classicist architecture in Berlin, especially the principle of tectonics at its core, came to be adopted effectively at faraway cities in East Asia, merging with the notion of national polity as Imperial Japan sought to reinvent Tokyo and mutating into an inevitable reflection of modern civilization upon reaching colonial Seoul, all of which give reason to ruminate over the phantasmagoria of modernity.

Book excerpt: Born to Foster H. McNair Jr. and Theresa M. McNair in Chester Pa. on Jan 26, 1953. To my knowledge I was born in a house and delivered by my sister. My mother and father divorced when I was four leaving my mother to raise me with the help from both sides of the family. I began writing in 1974 while serving onboard the USS Sargo a nuclear power submarine stationed in Hawaii. After an honorable discharge I went back home to Philadelphia and worked at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard until it closed in September of 1995. The years following that period until now have been crazy. I stayed employed by changing careers from an industrial electrician to a computer technician. This move landed me a good job at Unisys Corp. and provided me the opportunity to meet the woman I would fall in love with and marry, love you Treena. Writing for me is a blessing, it is not a constant inspiration I do get writers block but for the most part is does flow easily for me. I seldom thought about publishing my material but now that I am I look forward to touching the hearts and minds of people around the world and here at home.

Full book The Emergence of Subjectivity in the Ancient and Medieval World. This book was released on 2020-03-24 with total page 432 pages. Book excerpt: The Emergence of Subjectivity in the Ancient and Medieval World: An Interpretation of Western Civilization represents a combination of different genres: cultural history, philosophical anthropology, and textbook. It follows a handful of different but interrelated themes through more than a dozen texts that were written over a period of several millennia and, by means of an analysis of these texts, presents a theory of the development of Western civilization from antiquity to the Middle Ages. The main line of argument traces the various self-conceptions of different cultures as they developed historically, reflecting different views of what it is to be human. The thesis of the volume is that through examination of these changes we can discern the gradual emergence of what we today call inwardness, subjectivity, and individual freedom. As human civilization took its first tenuous steps, it had a very limited conception of the individual. Instead, the dominant principle was that of the wider group: the family, clan, or people. Only in the course of history did the idea of what we now know as individuality begin to emerge, and it took millennia for this idea to be fully recognized and developed. The conception of human beings as having a sphere of inwardness and subjectivity subsequently had a sweeping impact on all aspects of culture, including philosophy, religion, law, and art: indeed, this notion largely constitutes what is today referred to as modernity. It is easy to lose sight of the fact that this modern conception of human subjectivity was not simply something given, but rather the result of a long process of historical and cultural development.
